Renowned coral scientist returns to Ninney Rise Charlie Veron was the first full-time researcher on the Great Barrier Reef and since that time has logged more than 6000 hours underwater. Diving since he was 18, Charlie has participated in 67 expeditions to all of the major reef regions of the world and has described more than a quarter of the world’s coral species. |
And in just two week’s time he’ll be joining more than 25 other speakers to share stories of reef and rainforest conservation in an event hosted at Ninney Rise.
Ninney Rise is a heritage listed property at Bingil Bay, used as the base for significant reef and rainforest conservation campaigns in the 60s and 70s. Friends of Ninney Rise are in negotiations with the Queensland Government to lease the property and explore options for its future use.
Charlie Veron says the connection between Ninney Rise and the region’s history is something worth celebrating.
“It was from Ninney Rise that John Busst made Ellison Reef famous throughout Australia by stopping limestone mining there,” Charlie said.
“These are early memories for me, but I will never forget that victory – it was at the start of our country’s realisation that we owned the jewel in the ocean’s crown and that we were its custodians.”
“That guy is a hero,” Charlie said.
Rainforest and Reef Conservation Stories will be held at Ninney Rise from Thursday 3 – Saturday 5 July and includes the option of a field trip to the Reef with Charlie.
