Community Open Day at Ninney Rise-13 Feb 2014
It was a wonderful day at the Ninney Rise Community Open day.. Over 100 people visited the heritage home of John Busst to see the place where the battle to save the Great Barrier Reef was fought and won. Professor Iain McCalman told the whole story from research for his recently published book, The Reef a Passionate History.
Friends of Ninney Rise had an information stall and raised almost $600 on the first day selling raffle tickets to raise funds for a Conservation Management Plan for Ninney Rise.
Iain is keen to add his support in helping develop Ninney Rise as a small museum dedicated to the history of the site and to be used as a centre for visiting scientists and artists.

Media Release Jan 14
On Thursday 13th February the community will have the opportunity to visit the historic Ninney Rise, home of renowned conservationist and artist, John Busst. From midday, the Heritage listed home, now owned by National Parks, will be open to the public.
Ninney Rise is the base from which John Busst organized the 'Save the Reef' and rainforest campaigns in the 1960s and early 1970s. Set in rainforest by the Coral Sea, it was a meeting place for the campaigners and scientists including Prime Minister Harold Holt, poet Judith Wright, and scientists Webb & Tracey. When John Busst saved nearby Ellison Reef from limestone mining in the Innisfail court in 1967, it set the legal precedent for protecting the whole Great Barrier Reef, including from oil drilling. The campaigns led to the declaration of the world’s largest marine park, the formation of GBRMPA, and the eventual declaration of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
As there is limited space in the grounds at Ninney Rise we need to plan for parking . Please indicate your interest by emailing FoNR with a brief message of how many would like to visit.
