50th anniversary
Saturday 14 October 2017
Friends of Ninney Rise (FONR) at Mission Beach held a significant environmental heritage event on 14 October this year.
Exactly 50 years ago, diver Eddie Hegerl and friends gathered the scientific evidence that compelled the Queensland Government to refuse an application to mine Ellison Reef. This set the legal precedent for protecting the whole Great Barrier Reef and creating the world’s largest marine park. A number of high profile scientists visited Ellison Reef including Eddie Hegerl, Dr John (Charlie) Veron and Prof Iain McCalman. In the afternoon a forum with Iain as moderator was held on the verandas of Ninney Rise: 'Reflections - Celebrating the Past and Influencing the Future'. Celebrating the past and influencing the reef’s next 50 years with two events: Forum Panel - Look who was talking!
