Since that time the property has been the launching pad for many of the campaigns that resulted in the conservation of north Queensland’s rainforests and reefs.
Now a local collaboration of tourism, conservation and regional NRM groups is working together to lease the property back from the Queensland Government and explore options for its future.
Friends of Ninney Rise will open the historic property up for a special event which will capture and share rainforest and reef conservation stories from some of the scientists, artists and campaigners who’ve worked in the space over the past five decades.
President, Friends of Ninney Rise Suzie Smith said the event was unique, bringing together a mix of science, art and activism.
“Ninney Rise has always held a special place in the hearts of many people involved in conservation of our rainforest and reef environments,” she said.
“So it’s no surprise that our lineup of speakers for this two-day event is so diverse,” she said.
On the program are renowned coral scientist Charlie Veron, Chair Terrain NRM and past rainforest campaigner Mike Berwick, visiting researchers Professor Margaret Cohen (Stanford University USA), Professor Jonathan Lamb (Vanderbilt University) and Dr Michael Davis and Professor Iain McCalman (University of Sydney).
Aila Keto AO, founder of the Australian Rainforest Conservation Society, Jo Wills from the Queensland Museum in Cairns and Max Chappell from Wet Tropics Management Authority are also on the program joining local artists Liz Gallie, Daryl Dickson, Deanna Conti and Frances Thomson for a series of panel discussions.
In conjunction with the event, Spinifex Press will also launch a new edition of Judith Wright’s The Coral Battleground.
Rainforest and Reef Conservation Stories will be held at Ninney Rise from Thursday 3 – Saturday 5 July and includes the option of a field trip to the Reef. Full details at ninneyrise.com.
